Five Russians in the final of the Junior Grand Prix in figure skating unanimously drove the unfortunate Korean into sixth place. Now no one can fight Russian girls. Moreover, some of them would look great in the final of the adult Grand Prix. And I would even win medals there right now.
Don't believe me?
Anna Shcherbakova, Alena Kostornaya - now this is an exorbitant level for the rest of the world. Already next season they will move to the adult level, where no one has quadruple jumps yet. It is still impossible to say for sure which of the amazing students will repeat the glorious path of Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova.
And for whom the main successes will remain in junior age.
Generation "quad". Why the era of Zagitova and Medvedeva is rapidly fading
Anna Shcherbakova performed two quadruple lutzes for the first time and showed best result in the world. But the record was left to Alina Zagitova. Bye.
Kostornaya is stronger without quads
In the short program, Alena Kostornaya had no equal. In terms of style and emotions, it is the bronze medalist of last year's adult Russian championship who is closest to real women's figure skating, but in terms of difficulty she is inferior to Trusova and Shcherbakova, since she does not do quadruple jumps. In the short program among juniors they are prohibited, but in the free program they are welcome. Therefore, after the first day of the competition, Alena admitted that it would be difficult for her to win the overall victory.
Kostornaya’s advantage over the second Trusova did not reach even two points, which gave the latter an excellent chance of a final triumph. But quadruple jumps still need to be performed, and Sasha and Anya are not yet able to do this consistently.
Until adulthood, no, no! Why are these girls tired of figure skating?
Evgenia Medvedeva and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva have just shown: real figure skating is not for children. There's simply nothing to see there.
Shcherbakova failed both quadruples
First in free program The juniors were represented by Korean Kim Ye Lim, the only foreign skater in the Grand Prix final. Having made plenty of mistakes, she gave way to Anastasia Tarakanova on the ice. A former student of Tutberidze, who moved to Evgeni Plushenko’s school, opened the parade of Russian figure skaters with a cool clean skate, but a noticeable loss in difficulty and low scores for components left her outside the top three.
And with the appearance of Anna Shcherbakova on the ice at the Vancouver arena, the audience froze in anticipation of an unimaginable spectacle. Anya did not cope with the short program at all, being left without a cascade and breaking the double axel, but with a clean performance of the quadruples she could still qualify for medals. Unfortunately, both attempts to amaze the audience with a quadruple Lutz were unsuccessful. Two falls and an under-rotation on a triple Salchow in a cascade severely impacted the technique score and did not allow Shcherbakova to rise above fifth place both in the free program and in the total.
Kostornaya goes against fashion
Leader of the competition after short program Alena Kostornaya could compete with Trusova only thanks to her error-free skating. And the 15-year-old figure skater coped with her task perfectly. Her performance of Juliet was magnificent, and her clean jumps made the image even more convincing. Good technique scores and generous components added up to a total of 141.66 points for the free program and 217.98 points for the two programs. With such a result, Kostornaya would have pushed Elizaveta Tuktamysheva out of the top three winners of the adult final.
Even two quads didn’t help Trusova
However, such a high score did not guarantee Alena first place, because Trusova’s performance was ahead. And Sasha, at the very beginning of the program, made a significant request by jumping a quadruple Lutz. Yes, without a clear landing, with stepping, but this is a quadruple lutz! Our figure skater fell from the second such jump, but immediately got up and soon performed a quadruple sheepskin coat perfectly. Two landed quadruple jump in one program - this is simply fantastic. And although the program looks childishly naive and is much inferior in emotions to the same Juliet Kostornaya or Carmen Zagitova, a real revolution in figure skating is happening before our eyes!
Waiting for the Russian Championship
Even with the fall and other mistakes, Trusova received 79.41 points for her technique. None of the participants in the adult Grand Prix finals had that many! Kostornaya lost a little more than five points to Alexandra in technique, but the gap in components was even more significant. Thus, Alena Kostornaya, without quadruple jumps, was able to win both the free program and the Grand Prix final among juniors. It looks like the revolution is being postponed.
The top three winners were rounded out by the very young 13-year-old Alena Kanysheva, who trains with Svetlana Panova. And she is the only one of the five Russian women in the final of the Junior Grand Prix who will not have the opportunity to compete at the December Russian Championship in Saransk. This means that we are waiting for the strongest singles tournament in the world.

Held since the 1997/1998 season. It was conceived as a junior analogue of the Grand Prix series in figure skating (held for adult skaters).
Order of conduct[ | ]
Each season of the Junior Grand Prix consists of several stages (tournaments). At each stage, competitions are held and medals are awarded in four disciplines: men's singles skating, women's singles skating, pair skating and ice dancing. Usually there are seven stages, they can be carried out in different years in different countries.
At the end of each stage, the skaters, depending on occupied space points are awarded. In each of the four disciplines, six participants (skaters or pairs) who score the most points in the season receive the right to compete in the final tournament, the so-called Junior Figure Skating Grand Prix Final. (IN last years the final is held with the final of the adult Grand Prix in parallel, that is, in the same place and at the same time.)
Selection [ | ]
Unlike the adult Grand Prix series, juniors are selected not by rating, but by the decision of their Figure Skating Federation. The minimum age of a participant is 13 years old (must be completed before July 1 of the current year), the maximum is 19 years old (21 years old for boys performing in pairs or sports dancing). A striking example is Adelina Sotnikova, born on July 1, 1996 in Moscow, did not have the right to compete at the UGP until the 2010-2011 season.
Prize fund [ | ]
The prize fund at the stages of the junior Grand Prix series is:
VANCOUVER, December 9 – RIA Novosti, Anatoly Samokhvalov. The final of the Junior Grand Prix in figure skating ended in Vancouver, Russian athletes won 10 awards out of 12 possible, and took the entire podium in three out of four events.
The Russians won the entire podium in women's single skating, where Alena Kostornaya became first, Alexandra Trusova second, Alena Kanysheva third, in ice dancing - Sofia Shevchenko/Igor Eremenko (1st place), Arina Ushakova/Maxim Nekrasov (2nd place). 1st place), Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva/Nikita Nazarov (3rd place), as well as in pair skating - Anastasia Mishina/Alexander Gallyamov (1st), Polina Kostyukovich/Dmitry Yalin (2nd), Apollinaria Panfilova/Dmitry Rylov ( 3rd).
Kostornaya wins and looks forward to the fight with Kihira and Zagitova
“I didn’t think about it (about gold), I thought like this: maybe yes, maybe no. As fate wills. The main thing is to do your own thing,” said the Final winner Kostornaya immediately after it became clear that the current champion world junior Alexandra Trusova does not beat her.
“But I understand one thing: this season is harder than the last one. I understand that next season I will have to go out and compete with Rika (Kihira), Alina (Zagitova), Liza (Tuktamysheva), I need to gain international rating", she added.
Trusova, who came to Canada with hopes of taking gold at the Finals for the second year in a row, unsuccessfully performed two quadruple lutzes in her free program, and a cleanly performed quadruple toe loop and a number of complex cascades did not allow her to beat Kostornaya, who ultimately scored 217.98 points. This is more than Tuktamysheva, who won bronze in the senior final.
“Of course, I wanted to skate cleanly, especially since in training I was able to do a quadruple lutz in the warm-up. I guess I was worried. I hope that I will be able to do it at the Russian Championship,” Trusova said.
One of the main candidates for a place in the top three and even for victory was Anna Shcherbakova, who was the first in the history of women's singles to perform two quadruple lutzes in one program. This time Anna failed these elements, and before that she failed the short program and ended up fifth - 181.83.
“I can say that they can be made stable. It’s not that difficult if it’s (done) correctly technically,” Shcherbakova said about the quadruple lutz.
Bronze was won by the debutant of the junior season of the Grand Prix series, Alena Kanysheva, who scored 198.14 points. “I think I gave it my best. I didn’t expect to get on the podium at all, third place was a big surprise for me. I’m very pleased,” said Kanysheva.
The winner of last year's Junior Grand Prix Final, Anastasia Tarakanova, skated her free program cleanly, but finished fourth (190.46).
Mishina/Gallyamov win gold, and Shevchenko/Eremenko are shocked by the victory
Bronze medalists of the World Junior Championships in competitions sports couples Mishina and Gallyamov were in third position after the short program, but in the end they managed to win gold, scoring a total of 190.63 points. Kostyukovich and Yalin lost more points to their competitors and partners in the Velikov group (189.53). Third place went to Panfilova and Rylov (186.59).
The final of the Junior Grand Prix in ice dancing ended in triumph Russian athletes. Sofia Shevchenko/Igor Eremenko won gold, Arina Ushakova/Maxim Nekrasov won silver, Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva/Nikita Nazarov won bronze.
Shevchenko/Eremenko were in the lead after the rhythm dance in the Junior Grand Prix Final, ahead of their closest competitors and compatriots Ushakova and Nekrasov by 24 hundredths of a point. The free program was won by the pair Ushakova/Nekrasov, who scored 103.16 points, but Shevchenko and Eremenko won according to the total points (170.66). The Ushakov/Nekrasov duet came second (170.65).
“We don’t feel emotions, we are in shock,” Shevchenko told reporters. “We still don’t believe what happened. We walk around with round glass eyes. It’s very difficult to believe it. Of course, we are happy, but we can’t fully feel and experience this joy."
Khudayberdieva and Nazarov scored a total of 164.54 points, three hundredths of a point ahead of Canadians Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lag, who finished fourth.
Three Russian figure skaters: Alexandra Trusova, Alena Kostornaya and Anastasia Tarakanova take the first three places after the short program at the Junior Grand Prix final in Nagoya.
Daria Panenkova and Sofia Samodurova take 5th and 6th places.
Five Russian figure skaters reached the finals of the junior Grand Prix series. With the exception of Sofia Samodurova, a student of Alexei Mishin, the rest of the athletes train in Moscow in the group of Eteri Tutberidze.
It is noteworthy that all Russians skated their short programs cleanly in Nagoya. Only Daria Panenkova on the flip and Sofia Samodurova on the lutz were given an unclear edge. The skaters themselves noted that the current junior Grand Prix final to some extent reminds them of the Russian Championship, and for some participants even training at the Khrustalny skating rink. But this does not at all negate the excitement and serious attitude towards the start.
By the Grand Prix final, Alexandra Trusova’s program became even more vibrant and polished. When asked by journalists how the athlete manages to do this, Sasha admitted that she just needs to work very hard, which she does every day.
“Of course I was worried. This is my first final. There are a lot of people. But she overcame herself. I really wanted to come here. I reassured myself that no matter how I skated, I believed that everything would be fine,” commented Sasha.
For the short program, Trusova received her highest points of the season - 73.25. But at the same time I noticed that I don’t consider the rental ideal.
“We need to work on rotations. They are slow for me. Over skating. And there is always something to work on,” added Sasha. “I was hoping that with a clean performance I would get over 70. But the score of 73.25 points came as a surprise to me to some extent,” she said.
The athlete confirmed that in the free program she will jump a quadruple Salchow and will try to perform it cleanly. Let us remember that this season Alexandra Trusova began to do this difficult jump at the Grand Prix in Australia, and then at subsequent tournaments. Trusova qualified for the Grand Prix final with the first result, having won the Grand Prix in Brisbane and Minsk.
Alena Kostornaya from the Tutberidze team also scored more than 70 points - 71.65 for the short program in the series finals in Nagoya. The athlete explained that she really loves performing in public, and in this case it played a positive role.
“The public supported me very well. I like it when you go out on the ice, skate programs, people only look at you. “It’s inspiring,” admitted Alena. – I was practically not worried. Only a little when I went out for a six-minute warm-up. Still, the first serious start. But then the excitement passed. I did everything I could. And the points I received do not surprise me. I was ready for the fact that with a pure rental I would get over 70. I had to work so much! But this is mainly due to our coaching team. I'm just a performer. I never guess what scores they will give me. My task is to skate cleanly, to do my own thing.”
The figure skater explained that at each training session she does several full skates of programs. And her personal record is five such rentals. True, she didn’t skate the program inside and out. But still, it was a lot of work.
Anastasia Tarakanova closes the top three after the first event in Nagoya.
“I dealt with my anxiety,” she explained. - Although I was worried. This is my debut after all, the Grand Prix final is a responsible start. Because of this, I was constrained, a little squeezed. But I'm happy with the rental. The technical elements worked out. "Sizn best." But, of course, I would like to get more, around 68.5-69 points. I always strive for more. But this is also experience. My debut. But I'll learn. I’ll skate the free program more calmly, I’ll try to please everyone,” said Nastya.
Daria Panenkova is fifth after the short program.
“I skated here more confidently than at my previous competitions - the fifth stage of the Russian Cup. There were fewer worries. The public was supportive. Everything worked out well. But you need to work on the flip. I would like the ratings to be higher. This means that there was something wrong somewhere,” Dasha commented.
Sofya Samudrova said that she showed a good performance for herself.
“Alexey Nikolaevich is happy. For me this is the main thing. I rode with dignity. Preparations went according to plan. As usual. It is unusual that the women's final in juniors is the Russian championship. The strongest female athletes compete. And mine the main task“show your programs and skate cleanly,” said the athlete.
