Of course, we haven’t seen them since the Russian Championships. But at least some of those listed were probably ready for the last tournament of the season? Thirteen points for two is not God knows what a terrible figure, even if they would have done without medals. After all, they got by now?
But the ambitions of the winners forced them to choose a different path: one of the two brilliant figure skaters - either the gold or silver medalist of Pyeongchang - should be in Milan. According to official reports, confirmed by the athlete herself, Evgenia Medvedeva could not do this - a doctor’s ban in the name of the future. (The other day Evgenia announced that she was going to demonstration performances to Japan - the program was compiled without those prohibited by doctors due to high loads jumps and spins). So Alina remained. No right to pass.
Now we just have to survive the World Cup in Milan. Famous commanders also had to lose major battles. Sometimes they retreated deliberately - in the name of the future. At first, I was always in the shadow of the silver Evgenia Medvedeva. Then - endless celebrations and meetings. It’s impossible without them, and it’s impossible with them – preparation for the World Cup is very doubtful.
But Zagitova arrived from Pyeongchang with a fever. Athletes are no strangers to extreme sports. But when we talk about competitions, we have the right to be tough: a member of the Olympic team is not a child, but a professional. And when the president of the country meets you, when you are torn with the same questions at press conferences, when you are forced to show your apartment (the last place where you could hide from prying eyes) to foreigners, because you no longer have the right to refuse the rank of Olympic champion? That’s when a member of the Olympic team, even an Olympic champion, is overcome by natural fatigue. In Alina’s case, it’s the adult fatigue of a teenage body. And then the slightest glitch in the program can lead to confusion.
After the shock performance, many experts will agree that Alina did not expect her first, purely technical error on the Lutz. And then it was like a train going downhill: she simply didn’t understand what to do. Because even before the start I was knocked out of my usual training schedule. That accumulated inertia, behind which stands the greatest concentration that prevents making mistakes, was torn to shreds. And it makes it possible to quickly navigate what happened (remember how Alina in Pyeongchang coped with her own mistake: without doing a cascade at the beginning of the program, she repeated it at the end?).
This concentration was not enough. Alina did not have time to “return to herself” after the fall. And the jumps in the second part of the program inexorably followed one after another...
Russia has not lost its quotas. Just as Alina Zagitova has not lost and will never lose the title of Olympic champion. Clever, talented, beautiful Alina cried out for Milan’s grief on the chest of coach Eteri Tutberidze. We should have seen this too.
